Creating an Index Page at rear of PDF document

Hi,

I want to understand if there's a better way of creating an index page, though perhaps it's probably best if I decribe what I'm currently doing / have:

I have a large document in MS Word that has a Table of Contents created at the front and an Index at the rear, all generated in Word.   The word document includes multiple appendices which are populated once the Word doc is exported as a PDF.  Once exported I then insert multiple (100s) of other PDFs within the appendices.  At the beginning of each appendix is a contents page that I have created which lists all the datasheets and manuals included within that appendix (this is not a table of contents created in Word, simply a list).  Once the other documents are insterted I create links from the "Appendix contents page" and bookmarks to each of the inserted PDFs.

My issue is that in the Index page at the rear, the datasheets et al that are referenced here have the page number of the initial appendix contents page (which was created in Word); thus, I have multiple entries in the Index page that goes to the same page number (the appendix contents page).

Is there a way that I can get each additional PDF that's inserted into the main PDF to be referenced in the Index page with the correct number?  I presume that I would have to mark each additional PDF so it's picked up in the Index - I guess not to use Word to create the Index page would be a start.  Though, I have tried using Acrobat to create the index page and nothing happens.

I hope this makes sense.

I'm using Acrobat XI Pro.

Many thanks in anticipation,

Gary
