How link to media in an external document?

I currently have a PDF I built with lots of embedded video in it, but its size (about 90 MB) may be one reason a friend of mine finds that opening it, or the media within it, 'crashes' her computer. It's easy enough to point each link to an external MOV file but that would lead to about 200 such files, any one which could easily get lost, and anyway I'd prefer if possible for users not to be able to pick and choose whichever ones they want and use them in whatever way they like elsewhere (some copyright issues may arise as well since I myself don't own them, and will almost certainly have to pay royalties for the ones I use).

As a digression: note that they have to be MOV videos (or maybe some other legacy media, but I've already built them all as MOV files). I can't use Adobe's new media interface since they have sub-titles (which are obscured by Adobe's interface controls), and more importantly, since my users will need the ability to view them one frame at a time (impossible in Adobe's media interface).

What I'd really like is to embed them in another document, opaque to the user, from which each one (but only as selected on a given occasion) would be loaded into memory when the link to it in the main document is clicked on. Ideally the innards of the process would be invisible to the user, who would simply click the main document link and find that the media clip opens.

Is this possible? How?

Thanks in advance for your help!

P.S. As one possible guess, could they be embedded in another PDF, with internal ID's of a sort (like the #'s in HTML if I remember that right) that would be the only thing visible to a user who happened to open that external PDF? Is there doc on this somewhere? As a matter of fact, many of these videos (and several audios, too) are already embedded in various other PDFs that are opened in their entirety by links in the main document. Could I attach invisible ID's (or even visible ones) to each media clip embedded in these existing PDFs such that linking to each one would cause only the media clip itself to open without havng to open the entire PDF that it's embedded into?
