Acrobat Pro/Standard X and XI very slow (scrolling/searching/markup) over VPN using CIFS server shar

Hi All,

I really hope that someone has an explanation and fix for the following issue that I have: recently we moved our file service to a hosted server, which is a CentOS server running a Samba/CIFS share for our Windows 7 Pro, Acrobat Pro X and XI clients. There is a certificate based OpenVPN client running on the workstations and the share is mapped as a network drive. I moved the work files (mostly PDFs) to the new server and now the problem is that when users open PDFs they seem to be "streaming" and not fully loading - meaning that every time the users start scrolling through the document, it is painstakingly slow. It takes a second or two for the program to react to the mouse scroll (or the same thing when searching) and if I scroll too much it just stops and waits for 5 seconds or more. It seems like Acrobat is not loading the whole file when it is opened, but rather loads it piece-by-piece and very very slowly. PDF sizes range from under 1MB up to 60MB... avergage is around 7MB. The same thing happens also with XI reader and I also tried with an older copy of 8.0 Pro. The internet connection, which you may suspect is the problem, is a fast dedicated line.
And where it gets tricky is that I tested the same thing with another PDF program and it was so much faster. So there has to be some kind of a setting in Acrobat to make this quick as well. Or if it is a server feature that needs to be fixed/set, that's not problem either - I just need to know what server and share setup Acrobat prefers.
I've searched a lot, but I can't seem to find any related issues or problems with a similar to my server/client setup. It is hard to imagine that this is so unique though. I've tried some settings within Acrobat (the ones that I could find for slow scrolling), but those didn't help.

Thanks!
