pdfs displaying color as black

Exporting from Illustrator CC to pdf, text and graphics in color display in black (sometimes) and the pdf appears on screen with a heavy border around the page (sometimes). I've also noticed that since using CC, thumbnail previews display color graphics in black. I'm on Mac OS 10.7.5.
