Need to convert 85 MS Word files to PDF’s using Acrobat batch feature or another method.

I am trying to create pdf’s of many word documents without doing it one at a time. I tried the batching feature in 2 versions of Acrobat and got an error message saying “cannot open document”. I have also tried the Mac Automator software and the file I need “Convert Format of Word Documents” is not on my system. I have been searching the web off and on for a few months now for alternatives but haven’t found one. Please help.
