Acrobat 10 is "not responding"

Opening a new or existing pdf causes acrobat to "not respond".  Version 10.1.7.  I have installed the latest update.  Arcobat_reader_9 works just fine.  I need to modify pdf's.  I have also done the "repair" option and that didn't do anything.
