Font not embedded - but it should be?

$

Hi.
We receive PDF's which eventually have to be submitted to the FDA. Recently I have been getting validation errors about fonts not being embedded. I don't understand the errors because they seem to be telling me conflicting things.
For instance I have a PDF and if i check the fonts tab of the properties page it tells me i have ArialMT as an embedded subset and i also have ArialMT that is not embedded - (i've tried to upload a screenshot to make this more clear but i keep getting an error).

Basically "ArialMT (Embedded Subset)" is listed with some entries underneath, and then also "ArialMT"  (suggesting that is is not embedded) is also listed with entries underneath. So I am puzzled. How can the font ArialMT be both embedded and not embedded in the same PDF?

Next i run the preflight profile "List text using non-embedded fonts" and i am getting a lot of matches on the results tab - (in this case 4230 matches in 104 pages).
An example of a match is "ArialMT 9.0 pt TrueType not embedded Gray (ICC) (0.0) overprint: off"
I can drill down and find the place in the PDF - in this case it was the header on page1 - highlighting this text brings up the TouchUp properties window, the original font is ArialMT and the Editing font is Arial.

My main problem is that i have a lot of PDF's that were created by people with limited knowledge of Word and i cannot get hold of the originals, (i know the easiest solution would be to go back to the original word docs and just render them 'properly'.
As it is i have to work with what i have got.

Can anyone explain to me how all these different variations of Arial (ArialMT, ArialNarrow, etc) keep cropping up? I know that these documents will have been written in the default word font (i.e. Arial, Times New Roman or Calibri) and frankly most of the authors wouldn't have known how to change the fonts anyway.

And most of all why i can run the preflight PDF fixup 'Embed Fonts' - and it runs and says all the fonts are successfully embedded. Then i run the check for non-embedded fonts again and i get the same matches as before

So round in a circle. We have been manually editing these PDFs - but it is taking a long time 6 hours to do one! So i need to find a better solution....

Any help would be appreciated.

Links in PowerPoint 2010 Not Working in PDF

My PowerPoint 2010 file has several internal links.  Some pages/slides have multiple links.  When I save the file as a PDF, some of the links work correctly, but most of them disappear.  Trouble-shooting experiments so far include grouping and ungrouping items that have links -- there doesn't seem to be a pattern for what's going to work or not in the PDF.  My other experiment was creating the links using PowerPoint's "Hyperlink" feature instead of the "Action" feature.  That doesn't appear to make a difference.

I know how to recreate the links in the PDF file but that's not very efficient.

Anyone know the trick for telling Adobe Pro to retain all links?  Thanks!

How can I make my contact us page a downloadable PDF

Sorry for what may be a simple task but I am not sure how to create a pdf of my contact page at http://glasgow-dentists.co.uk/contact-us/

I would like patients to be able to download and print the page as I will be adding directions.

Also I am considering putting in an email function so they can email themselves or someone else the pdf.
Would be great if it could remain clickable somehow for the map.

Appreciate any quick pointers to where I could learn how to do this.

Also if there is a specific reader/software I need please let me know.
I am using Windows 7

thanks,

Colin

Hebrew problem

When I export a PDF containing Hebrew words in Acrobat Pro 11 the  characters are rendered left to right rather than right to left. The PDF shows everything correct. How can I fix this or is it an issue with Acrobat and if so what can I do?

Acrobat 10 & 11 large TIFF to PDF Issue

I'm having issues converting large resolution TIFF files to PDF in version Acrobat 10 & 11 pro or stand.

The error message I'm receiving is that "Adobe does not recognize the file format", but in Acrobat 9.0 (without any update patches) using the "Convert to Adobe PDF" option works flawlessly.

I spoke with support and they claim it is a known issue and they're working on a fix.  I had hope this issue would have been resolved in Adobe Acrobat 11 but the issue still persists.  I would like to know when this issue will be addressed since many users at my company are affected by this.

Thanks,

Jimmy

A4 to letter size

I'm compiling a conference proceedings where the formatting instructions specify margins suitable for letter size paper.  Many European authors have done everything right except that their pdf contributions are A4.  In an earlier version of Acrobat (7, I think), this caused no problem.  I could open the A4 pdf file, print it to pdf as letter size, and the results came out perfectly centered for letter size paper.  This isn't working in Acrobat X.  The output looks exactly the same as in the original A4 version: left and right margins are unequal, top margin too small.  Is there any solution short of asking the authors to redo their submissions?

RGB colors become dull in Acrobat PDFs

I'm using CS6 and when I create a PDF, the RGB colors appear much duller than the original source file. The shift is about (if not exactly) what you would see if you converted an RGB document with bright colors to CMYK.

I'm on a Mac using the latest update to OS X. My typical process for creating a PDF is by starting with Photoshop JPEGs and using the "Combine Files in a Single PDF" function, or by exporting an InDesign document (with RGB art) directly to a PDF.

If I open the exported PDF in either Adobe Acrobat Pro (10.1.4) or the latest version of Adobe Reader, the bright, saturated RGB colors in the original document appears noticeably dull in the PDF.

I've experimented with several different Color Settings to no avail, including different RGB settings (sRGB, Adobe RGB (1998), etc.). Currently my settings are using Bridge to Synchronize my Color Settings across my CS6 apps (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat) and have confirmed they are all reporting a Synchronized state.

My overall Color Setting is "Monitor Color" (though I've also tried others, including the default North American General Purpose). My RGB Workspace for all apps is set to the Profile of my Dell monitor, which was created with Apple's built-in calibration tool (not the best, I know, but wouldn't account for a difference as dramatic as this.) And my Color Management Policies under these Syncronized settings are all automatically set to "Off".

As a test, if I export my RGB InDesign document to a JPEG and open that file back in Photoshop, the colors are fine—unchanged from the original look as they originally appeared in Photoshop. It's only when I go to Acrobat that the colors shift to a duller version.

I keep looking in Acrobat preferences for a "Display PDF with Embedded Profile" or something along those lines, but Acrobat Color Management settings are the same as all my other CS6 apps.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

R

Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard Stopped working correctly

I have a legal licensed version of Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard that has worked fine for several years. Suddenly and possibly after one of the not so helpful updates, I can no longer delete, insert or extract pages. The delete option shows but is grayed out and the other options do not even show as a possibility anymore. I tried: repair, reinstall, deleting all version and reinstalling but nothing has helped. I truly need this function. Contact with Adobe directly and there answer was "ask someone who can help" (ok a paraphrase for sure but basically they said go ask the community). Nice right? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

"Adobe acrobat elements has stopped working" error message

I am running Microsoft Office 2007, Windows 7, and Acrobat 8 Professional.

When I right click on an Word or Excel file icon and select "Convert to Adobe PDF" it first begins the conversion process and then it stops and I receive an error message saying "Adobe Acrobat Elements has stopped working".  Windows searches for a a solution but doesn't find anything and must close the program.  The error only seems to occur when trying to convert Office files to PDF's using the right click method, as it works on other types of files.  I used to be able to convert Office files this way until about a month ago.

I am able to convert the Office files to PDF files by opening the individual file and going to "Save As" and selecting "PDF" from the drop down list.  I am also able to convert them by opening the files and going to "Print" and selecting "Adobe PDF" from the available printers.  So I'm not completely locked out of creating PDF files from Office files but am curious as to what is causing the error when I try to convert them using the right click method.  I was unable to find anything relevant through Internet searches or forums or anybody experiencing the same issue.  Thank you for any help.

I installed IE10 and didn't like it.  Unstalled 10 and restored IE9.  I am using Acrobat 9 Pro.  After I reinstalled IE9, the toolbar for PDF conversion had disappeared.  It is no longer a choice in the View Toolbars drop down list.  Please share a solution if you have one.

Hello,

Following the recent update to V11.0.2, the Acrobat PDF converter for Word 2010 fails to generate the output document correctly. It misses out the text box part of the Word header.

However, using Acrobat XI via the "Print to PDF printer" appears to generate the output file correctly.

System is Windows XP-SP3 with Office 2010 (and all current updates), plus Acrobat Pro V11.0.2

Example Word source and resulting PDF are available, if anyone can figure out how to use this web interface to post examples.

Cannot change font, size or anything for typewriter tool

Hello all,

I am having an issue with the typewriter tool.  I cannot seem to change my font on about 95% of my PDFs?  Every once in awhile I am able to change the font and size.  But I cannot find a consistancy and cannot figure out the issue?  When I want to write on the PDFs to change size or font, it won't allow me to.  Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tiny 1 point numbers in front of headings, links

$

Exporting PDFs from MS Word 2010 (Windows). Acrobat 11 Pro.

For the past couple of weeks, exporting PDFs from MS Word creates tiny microscopic letters/numbers in front of headings, links, and other items.

To the naked eye they look like a black dot, but zoomed in shows 01, 02, T2201 and similar things.

First graphic is what you see in the PDF viewed at 100%.

Acrobat numbers junk 1.jpg

The second graphic is zoomed in 2000%. The number is set in 1 point type.

Acrobat numbers junk 2.jpg

Word .docx file uses traditional Heading 1, Heading 2 styles for formatting. No numbering is set for these items in word. And once they are generated in the PDF, they are in little text frames in front of the heading text.

They are not produced when I transfer this document to another computer and export to PDF, so there's something in my system that's doing this.

They are affecting accessibility because they are read as part of the heading. In this example, screen reader voices it as "1 Busing" instead of "Using."

Any ideas how to stop these little monsters from showing up in my PDFs?

I am trying to pagninate a manual and when I use the Header/Footer to paginate the document it accurately counts the pages but an error message states that a page is "out of range" and it refuses to number all of the pages.  Any ideas on how to fix this?
