[BUG] Acrobat Distiller/Adobe PDF Printer Can't Handle Double Quotes in Webpage Titles?

$

0

When printing a webpage that has double quotes ("") in the title of the page from Chrome, Firefox or Opera, Acrobat Distiller throws an error stating it "cannot open this file".
The file it references is not a valid file and in fact it directly corresponds to the title of the webpage.
After clicking 'ok' N number of times, the PDF is created, but one shouldn't be seeing this prompt.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Open any of the following browsers: Chrome, Firefox or Opera
  2. Go to any of the following search sites: google.com, bing.com or yahoo.com
  3. Search for a term surrounded in double quotes.  For example, search for the term EXACTLY as written below - and be sure to include the double quotes:
    "fiber bars"
  4. On the search results page (google for example), print the results to the Adobe PDF printer
  5. Choose a file name to confirm generation of the PDF
  6. You should receive the Acrobat Distiller dialogs:
    1. FiberBars001.png
    2. FiberBars002.png
    3. FiberBars003.png
    4. FiberBars004.png
    5. FiberBars005.png
  7. Although a PDF is generated, one has to click through N number of times on the Acrobat Distiller dialog above.

To eliminate the possibility that it was a problem with the websites in question, I did the following:

  1. Created a basic HTML file (click here to download) and configured it with double quotes in the title page, mirroring what the title would be in the search results
  2. Opened the locally created HTML file in Chrome
  3. Printed to the Adobe PDF printer and successfully reproduced the issue.
  4. I then tried with Firefox and Opera and successfully reproduced the issue there as well.
  5. Opening the file in IE and printing it does not reproduce the issue.

Below are the screenshots of the errors seen when using the basic HTML file I created:

  1. DistillerPDFQuoteIssue001.png
  2. DistillerPDFQuoteIssue002.png
  3. DistillerPDFQuoteIssue003.png
  4. DistillerPDFQuoteIssue004.png
  5. DistillerPDFQuoteIssue005.png
  6. DistillerPDFQuoteIssue006.png
  7. DistillerPDFQuoteIssue007.png

Key Details:

  • I can reproduce in Adobe Acrobat Pro DC 2015 Classic v2015.006.30198 on Windows 10 v1511 x64 build 10.0.10586.589.
  • I can reproduce in Adobe Acrobat X Pro v10.1.14 on Windows 7 x64.
  • I can reproduce by searching for something in double quotes on google.com, bing.com, yahoo.com, amazon.com and printing the results.
  • I can reproduce using new installations of very recent versions of the top or most popular/common browsers:
    • Google Chrome (e.g.: 54.0.2840.99)
    • Mozilla Firefox (e.g.: 49.0.1 )
    • Opera (e.g.: 41.0)
  • When using Google Chrome, Firefox and Opera, a PDF is generated, but one gets the 'Acrobat Distiller' prompts as described above.
  • When using Internet Explorer 11, a PDF is also generated but one does NOT receive the 'Acrobat Distiller' prompts as described above.
  • It doesn't matter if the print is executed using the browser's print dialog or the system print dialog.
  • I can reproduce on different computers bot physical and virtual.
  • I can reproduce using different user accounts both with and without admin rights on the workstation.
  • A reboot doesn't resolve the issue.
  • Resetting the browser doesn't resolve the issue.
  • Clearing out temp files in %temp%, %windir%\Temp as well as the browser cache doesn't resolve the issue.
  • Uninstalling & reinstalling the browser doesn't resolve the issue.
  • Repairing the Adobe Acrobat installation via Help > Repair Installation (and rebooting) doesn't resolve the issue.
  • Windows 10 Acrobat Pro DC 2015: Repairing the Adobe Acrobat installation via right-clicking on the MSI AcroPro.msi in
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 2015\Setup Files\{AC76BA86-1033-FFFF-7760-0E0F06755100}"
And selecting "Repair" (and rebooting) doesn't resolve the issue.
  • Windows 7 Acrobat X Pro v10: Reparing the Adobe Acrobat installation via right-clicking on the MSI AcroPro.msi in
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 10.0\Setup Files\{AC76BA86-1033-F400-7760-000000000005}"
And selecting "Repair" (and rebooting) doesn't resolve the issue.
  • Completely blowing Acrobat away via the cleaner tool, rebooting, reinstalling & rebooting doesn't resolve the issue.

Possible Workaround (not a solution in my humble opinion)

Near as I can tell, the only workaround is to go into the Adobe PDF printer properties and check the 'Enable advanced printing features' box under the 'Advanced' tab.

The only noticeable drawback to this is that the generated PDF no longer launches once created.

On the surface - for me anyway - its not that big of a deal, but for those who are regularly churning out PDF's, this may be a deal breaker.

I don't know what else is affected by that change, but it's the only thing so far that eliminates the Acrobat Distiller prompt in Chrome, Firefox and Opera.

Open PDFs on Adobe Acrobat Pro and not Reader

HI, I got Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.5 and also Acrobat Acrobat Reader DC (to allow PDF preview in windows explorer) installed on my Windows 10 PC. I did set default default APP for PDFs to Acrobat Pro but if I double click on a PDF it does open still in Acrobat Reader? Can I change this?

I did search the www and also the forum couldn't find an answer.

Thanks Jens

Append all links on multiple pages

I saved a document (a statute) from the Internet to a PDF. The statute contains a link to each individual section, and is quite lengthy. I am interested in appending all of the section links to the PDF document over multiple pages. I have tried it this way, but it's not working: I select multiple pages using the page thumbnails pane, and then click Link - Append All Links on Page.  However, this only appends the links from the first page in the selection. Is there a way to view and depend all of the links over multiple pages?   I have attached screen shots to show what I'm talking about.1.JPG2.jpg3.jpg

Help with date calculation

I am trying to work on a calibration document (.pdf).  I have a field labeled "Field 1" that I type today's date into.  Then, in another field "Field 2" I change the year.  For example, if I input December 14, 2016 into "Field 1" I then type December 14, 2017 into "Field 2".  Is there a way to automate this?  thanks!

Asking for file name for each Excel worksheet

We are using Acrobat Pro 9.0 with Excel 2010 to create pdf's from Excel workbooks with several worksheets. We have a workbook that when the entire workbook is printed to pdf, the "Save As" dialog comes up for almost every worksheet, but not all. We use Acrobat for this task regularly without this issue, so I have been looking for any differences in this workbook compared to others that save correctly. I have tried this on multiple computers with the same result.  Any Ideas?

Convert to PDF is Not an Option in Windows Explorer

Good Afternoon,

I have installed Acrobat XI on a user's system using my account which has local admin privileges on the machine.  If I open Windows Explorer, and right click on a file, I have the options to convert to PDF or Combine Files into a PDF.  When the user of the machine logs in using their credentials, those options are no longer available and if you open Acrobat and select the Combine Files into a PDF, an error appears at the bottom stating that the files that were selected to be combined are not of the proper file type.  Meanwhile, if I try and perform this action under my account and I drag the same files into the Combine Files into PDF dialog box, it works fine.

I thought that this was initially a user access issue, but I have other users that have Acrobat installed (same version, same machine, same user access) and it works fine.  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling to no avail.  I am looking for any assistance.  I have posted this question to Experts Exchange to no avail.  I am out of possible solutions.

Unable to convert to PDF from a network location

Hello,

When trying to convert (by right clicking) an Office document (doc, xls) from a network location on one user's account, I get the following error:

"The file you have selected for conversion doesn't have any data. (Zero Length file) Please select another."

The user can convert from within Word itself using the add-on but not by right clicking. The user is able to convert by right clicking any file other than Office files from within the network location.

It works if the user moves the Office files to their desktop and then converts by right clicking.

It worked for the user before.

I (the network administrator) am able to convert Office from the network location by right clicking. The user has full rights to their network share (and can convert any file from the network share other than Office files).

I have attempted reinstalling Office and Adobe Reader X, as well as installing a trial of XI. This happens on multiple computers (same scenario as above.. normal user can convert any file from a network location other than Office files, admin can do Office files too).

Very odd issue.

Any ideas?

Page Setup Margins Grayed

$

I'm using the latest version of Acrobat (as of 12/16/2016), which is a 2015 Release.

I created a PDF file in InDesign, with 0 as values for all Margins. The exported PDF opens and previews in Acrobat correctly, but gets printed with an obvious margin (I have an image Flush on the Upper- Left Side that mysteriously indents itself left when printed).  Under Page Setup, the Margins Box is grayed out, with "1" in every value.  Printing with "Actual Size" checked helped slightly, but the Image is still not Flush; there's obviously still something creating this margin.

Has there been any successful work around for this issue? I've read several threads, but none of the efforts seem to be reproducing the PDFs 100% accurately in terms of sizing and margins.

EDIT I realize not all home/basic office Printers will do edge to edge or borderless printing, but it's frustrating that this option is still grayed out

Cannot convert Web page to PDF with Adobe Chrome extension

I have single license purchased Adobe Acrobat XI Pro version 11.0.18 and Chrome version 55.0.2883.87.  Both installed and running on Windows 10 PC.

Whenever I attempt to convert a web page to PDF I get the message:

"Conversion Failure

A supported version of Acrobat could not be found. Install a free 30-day trial."

Why would this feature not support the version I have which cost me $181 less than three years ago?

Is there a limitation for converting email to Portfolio in Acrobat?  Numbers of files? File size?

I am unable to converting emails into portfolio when I have over 250 items.  Getting a "Item failed to convert" error message.

I am using Acrobat XI Pro and Outlook 2010.  Thank you.

Would it be possible to convert PDF files to wiki markup?

This is currently possible but there is a loss of formatting and images have to be reinserted manually. If this could be done to a high quality and reliably then a wiki of scientific research could be built. We could hyperlink all research together and be rid of this awful closed science PDF nightmare.

Cannot convert file type to pdf

I recently upgraded to a new pc and to Office 2013 but am still using Acrobat XI Pro that I purchased in April 2015.  Since those upgrades when I try to combine office files into a pdf I get an error message that reads "Cannot convert file type to pdf.  Please remove this file from the list."  I've worked through the process suggested in Solution 4 and do not have any items on the disabled list.  I've reinstalled my Acrobat XI Pro.  What do I need to do to get this working again?

Powerpoint files that had successfully converted to PDF now display with different background.

Problem:   I have powerpoint files that had successfully converted to PDF. All of a sudden, when I open the PDF the background appears differently. The first image (top) displays the PDF as it should look, using Preview (the built-in Mac viewer). The second image (bottom) is of the PDF using Acrobat Pro XI (11.0.18). Instead of the blue gradient, the image is white. When another user opens the same PDF on her Windows machine it displays properly, blue gradient intact.

Related Forum Post:   My issue is similar to the one linked below. That problem was resolved by Acrobat > Preferences > Accessibility > Replace Document Color was  turned on when it shouldn't have been. In my case, the accessibility setting was fine.

creating pdf from MS Word, loses graphic with Acrobat XI pro, but not with Acrobat X

my client has a word doc that she saves as pdf using file-> save as adobe pdf, and loses data

same if she uses the Acrobat tab on top of word

saves fine is she uses file -> save as and select drop down from word and select pdf file type

this client is using Acrobat XI pro.

We tested the same steps with the same word doc from another computer, running Acrobat X, and no data is lost with any method of saving the word doc to pdf.

We tested on multiple machines that run Acrobat XI and all were consistent in the result.  Seems to be something that 'works' in Acrobat X but not in the newer Acrobat XI.

Are there issues/bugs with using the file -> save as or adobe tab with Adobe XI ?

Hello,

I am experiencing problems when I try to save my image created in Photoshop (CS6 v13.0.1 x64) as a PDF file.

This is what happens with font color (PDF file viewed in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC version 2015):

What can I do about it?

Thank you very much.
